7th Grade Geography
Course Description
Throughout the year, we will be breaking the world apart into different regions. We will be learning where the countries are located, the physical aspects of each country, the history of the region, and the culture of each region.
Homework
I do not give out a lot of homework throughout the year. I always try to give the students time in class to complete any project or work. If they do not complete the task in class, it will become homework.
I always collect the notes the day of the test. The students are responsible for holding on to their notes until that day.
Tests
Tests will be given at the end of most chapters. Two days before the tests, each student is given a notecard that they can use on the test. They are able to take their notes and put whatever they want on these notecards to help them on the test. The notecards are only able to be used if the student has handed in all of their work, and their notes. The day before the test is used as a review day where games and partner review is used.
*Notecards are a privilege and will be taken away at the teacher's discretion.
Projects
There will be many projects throughout the year. Most of these projects will be with a group but some will be individualized. I always give time for these to be completed in class. If the students are not using their time wisely, this will become homework. Projects are always graded on an individual basis. I am always watching what the students are doing and asking what they have done to help with the project. I will not discount everyone's grades because a partner did not get something done, everyone is graded separately.
Book
We will be using book Discovering World Geography by McGraw-Hill. Each student is responsible for bringing this book to class everyday.
Reading
Reading is an essential part of a students learning. Reading helps raise test scores, develops better writing habits, and makes the college transition easier. Because of this, the students will be reading a book of their choice (at their reading level) every Tuesday and Thursday for the first 15 minutes of class. The students will be expected to have a notebook for their reading logs. At the end of the 15 minutes, the students will write how many pages they read, and a short summary of what they read. I will be collecting and grading these at random (within a two week period) and they will be graded on this.
Grading
The school uses the same grading scale across the board. I do not have weighted grades so points are points in my class. Students able to hand in late homework for a 5 point deduction each day it is late. Once it reaches the 50% mark, I no longer deduct points. The students are able to hand in homework up until 3 days before a quarter ends. I will mark a "0" in powerschool once it is late but will change the grade as soon as homework is in.
